WEST NORTHUMBERLAND COUNTY, Tuesday January 23, 2018 – The members of the Community Physician Recruitment and Retention Committee (CPRRC) wish to announce the retirement of Dr. Jay Amin and the recruitment of Dr. Carla Sabatini.

Dr. Jay Amin will be retiring from the Cobourg Medical Centre effective January 31, 2018. Dr. Amin has practiced family medicine for 37 years. Dr. Amin has been a very active member of our community. She has held privileges at Northumberland Hills Hospital (NHH) where she has supported the Obstetrics, ICU and Emergency departments. She has also held many leadership roles on committees within NHH.

Dr. Amin and Dr. Sabatini
“When I started practicing in Cobourg 37 years ago I was blessed to have joined the practice of Drs. Leeson, Scott, Wilson and Flindall, all of whom were excellent mentors. I am grateful for the constant support of my colleagues, nurses and staff at both Cobourg General Hospital and Northumberland Hills Hospital. Community acceptance has always been a much appreciated part of my career here,” said Dr. Amin.

In a letter to her patients Dr. Amin stated that, “I am looking forward to a new chapter in my life, having more time with my family and friends, travelling and resurrecting hobbies.

I will certainly miss seeing my patients on a regular basis. I am proud to have been a part of your health care team over the years and will always be thankful of your support. I wish you well for the future.”

Dr. Amin is highly regarded by both her colleagues and her patients. Dr. Broderick stated, “I have known Jay since 1996 as a friend, colleague and partner. During that time, she has impressed me with her kindness, broad knowledge and superb clinical skills. She has been a “general” practitioner in the truest sense, supporting our community hospital at one time as an emergency room physician, more recently serving in several in-patient departments, including medicine, obstetrics, palliative care and rehabilitation. She has worked diligently and successfully as chief of several departments as well as a member of the Medical Advisory Committee. It has been a pleasure to share an office practice with her over the years and I wish Jay and her spouse, Ian, future happiness during her well deserved retirement.”

“On behalf of her patients and the community of West Northumberland the CPRRC would like to take this opportunity to thank Dr. Amin for her outstanding contribution to the health and well being of her patients. She will be sadly missed by both her patients and colleagues and we wish her all the best in her retirement,” stated Tracy West, CPRRC Physician Recruiter.

The CPRRC is very pleased to announce that newly recruited Dr. Carla Sabatini will be taking over the practice of Dr. Amin therefore ensuring the continuity of care for all the patients. Dr. Sabatini will be joining the Cobourg Medical Center beginning in January and will take over the practice as of February 1, 2018. She will attend to her patients admitted to NHH and will further support the community hospital by working in the Obstetrics Department and the Emergency Department.

“I am fortunate that Dr. Carla Sabatini will take over my practice. Dr. Sabatini grew up in Guelph, graduated from medical school at St. Georges University in Granada and recently completed her Family Medicine Residency at St. Elizabeth Health Centre in Kentucky,” said Dr. Amin.

Dr. Sabatini stated that, “I was drawn to the style of family medicine as it's practiced in West Northumberland, a practice that gives me the opportunity to continue to deliver babies and work in the hospital's emergency department, as well as seeing patients both in the office and in the hospital.” Dr. Sabatini along with her husband and daughter have loved settling down in Cobourg, enjoying the beach, the vibrant downtown, the excellent coffee and the walkable neighbourhoods.

“The CPRRC is very pleased to welcome Dr. Sabatini and her family to our community. Her recruitment is another example of the successful recruitment efforts by the CPRRC as they strive to recruit new family physicians in order to keep pace with the future needs of our residents,” said Gerald Blackstock, CPRRC Chair.

Thanks to support from the community and the much needed financial support from west Northumberland municipalities, the CPRRC is positioned to maintain its recruitment initiatives and recruitment momentum in order to continue attracting family physicians to our area.

Dr. Sabatini will be taking over the entire patient roster of Dr. Amin and will not be accepting any new patients at the present time. If you are seeking a family physician please contact Health Care Connect at 1-800-445-1822.
